The team behind Splash Adventure Water Park travels across Spain to uncover the best water parks the country has to offer.
But this time, we were tipped off about a place that’s quite different…
That is: hot springs which are both relaxing and free to use!
Located in the town of Outariz, just outside of Ourense, the “Termas de Outariz” thermal baths are the largest of the council-run facilities in the region.
Read on to find out more.
What are the Termas de Outariz?
Outariz is known for its natural hot springs, which have been enjoyed for centuries due to their mineral-rich waters and therapeutic benefits.
The Termas de Outariz baths are inspired by Japanese “Onsen” culture. It’s about offering a place of peace and tranquillity where visitors can relax and unwind in harmony with nature.
What’s amazing is that some of the baths are free to the public.
These public baths are connected by a beautiful white, curved metal footbridge that links six thermal pools and two cold plunge pools. The facilities are open to everyone, making them an accessible and budget-friendly wellness experience.
The water in these pools emerges at a temperature of around 61°C and is naturally rich in bicarbonates, sodium, fluorides, and sulfur.
It’s ideal for soothing muscle pain, improving circulation and promoting skin health.
For those looking for a more exclusive experience, there is also a private thermal resort on the Minho thermal route. This beautifully designed space features wooden Japanese-style architecture and offers an extended range of services, including massage treatments and spa therapies.
The private baths remain open until 11 pm and offer a luxurious way to enjoy the thermal waters for a small fee.
Facilities
Termas de Outariz offers a range of thermal experiences, with two distinct circuits designed to cater to different relaxation needs:
- Circuito Zen: Inspired by traditional Japanese spas, this area features calm waters, wooden structures, and smooth stone surroundings, creating the perfect ambience for relaxation and meditation.
- Circuito Celta: Drawing inspiration from Celtic architecture, this circuit offers pools with more dynamic water movement, including jets, bubbles and waterfalls—ideal for relieving tension and soothing sore muscles.
In addition to the pools, guests can enjoy “rotenburos” and “ofuros” (traditional Japanese baths), saunas, cold water barrels for contrast therapy, and a large spa area featuring geysers, waterfalls, and water beds.
The facility also includes a spacious terrace cafe with refreshments such as sandwiches, drinks, and even Japanese specialities like sushi.
Other on-site services include:
- Free lockers
- Towel rental for 2€
- A multi-use event room for gatherings and meetings
